Working Where You’re a Consumer

Hey everyone!

Today I’m going over working where you buy a lot from. Whether this be a clothing store, fast food place, coffee shop, etc. there are pros and cons based on your spending habits.

This is a piece where I’ll be talking a lot about my personal experience opposed to hard facts. Everybody’s experiences are different, so don’t take my advice as the end all be all!

My goal is to show you how different jobs offer different benefits and effect your spending in different ways.

Will Working Here Increase or Decrease My Spending?

Before working somewhere you should see what the benefits are like. For example, Kohl’s associates get 15% off of everything and once in a while (like for the event Friends and Family) it will increase to 20% or 25%. On the other hand, Dunkin’ Donuts employees receive free beverages while working.

Out these two places I’ve worked, I’ve spent SO MUCH MORE MONEY at Kohl’s because I get nice clothes for cheap. I honestly didn’t even shop at Kohl’s before I worked there. However, I get coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks mostly every day, so working there saved me about $4 a day or almost $30 a week!

There are also places I’ve worked like AMC where it doesn’t increase or decrease my spending, but overall, it decreases it. I’m not a movie person (yes I know it’s ironic) so I don’t see movies a lot. However, if I do want to see a movie, it’s free. Sometimes we even have early employee showings! So while I don’t spend money at movie theatres as much as coffee shops, when I do I save a lot of money. (~$10 a ticket around prime time and I can have 2 people with me so ~$30).

Will I Get Sick of This Place?

Using my working experience as an example again; like I said, I’m not a movie person, but now I’m really not a movie person because I don’t want to spend hours where I work. Even if I want to see a movie, I’ll usually procrastinate until I have at least 2 days where I don’t work so I don’t feel like I’m working while I watch a movie.

However, I never got sick of Dunkin’ Donut’s coffee. Yes, sometimes I still went to Starbucks and certain drinks lost their charm, but I always made myself multiple drinks while I was working and I still go there now that I don’t work there.

Lastly, Kohl’s is always changing because of the merchandise always changing, so while I don’t like to visit the store on my free time, there’s at least new things to shop through (and I love to shop!).

Learning Behind the Scenes

The best thing, hands down, about working where you’re a consumer is learning all of the behind the scenes tricks (so I can post them for you, haha).

Learning things as an employee instead of a customer will always be more thorough and enlightening. The customer asks the employee questions, not the other way around, right?

You know for sure if you’re getting hoed at other establishments; for example if your coffee is way more expensive for some reason, or if your coupon didn’t go through.

Knowing the Coupon Days and Discounts

Just for starters: if you have a Kohl’s charge card and there are no coupons out you can request a scratch off coupon, movies are $5 all day if you have a Stubs card at AMC on Tuesday, and it’s worth it to have a Dunkin Donut’s rewards card if you spend money there anyways. I’ll do individual posts and link them here when they’re done!

Most places offer student, senior, or military discounts even if they’re not advertised, or at least have certain days for them. For example, Dunkin’ Donut’s has a senior discount and AMC has a student, senior, child, and military discount on tickets. There’s really no reason to ever pay full price for tickets. Check out my post on if AMC Premiere is worth $15.

Make Your Choice

When deciding to work at a place where you’re a customer, remember to really think about it and make sure it won’t ruin it for you. List the pros and cons and make the decision for yourself!

Valentine’s Day Line

It’s no secret that Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday. And yes–I think I like it even more than Christmas presents! In the spirit of my favorite holiday I opened a new line on Natural Essentials with 2 special products.

  1. Aphrodisiac Blend ($6, 1 mL)

    • Definition: “an aphrodisiac food, drug, potion, or other agent that arouses sexual desire.” So I guess this falls under [love] potion? Spooky.
    • Diffuse this at sexy time so you and your partner associate the aphrodisiac scents with getting it on. It’s simple science and psychology.
    • Fun Fact: Cleopatra used essential oils as aphrodisiacs
  2. Rose Essential Oil ($18, 1 mL)

    • This oil is so friggin’ expensive! *rolls eyes* What better way to celebrate V-Day than smelling like roses? Rose essential oil is also good for correcting blemishes and mood lifting, so it’s not just for Love Day.
    • Keep a look out for discounts on my blog posts if $18 is just too steep for you.

  3. Aeropostalé Their winter sale is still going on which means $11 sweatshirts/pullovers, $5 T-Shirts, etc.

That’s all that I’ve seen for good sales. If you have any suggestions, comment the store and why so I can add them!

I’m Dreaming… Of a White Christmas…

Xmas_lights_DC.JPGThere is some MAJOR bah humbug in the air this Christmas season.

Luckily, I have a few tips to save your holiday cheer!

  1. Go to a Christmas Eve service. Be reminded what Christmas is all about! I’m going to a candlelight service, and I can’t wait to see how beautifully the church is decorated and hear the pastor’s message.
  2. Watch those old movies you had on tapes when you were younger. For me, it’s Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman. I don’t have a VCR anymore, but these holiday classics are on DVDs at grocery stores, dollar stores, and just about anywhere else you can buy something this holiday season. Look around- they my just be hiding in your DVD cabinet. If not, watch The Hallmark Channel to see some cheesy Christmas movies!
  3. If your family doesn’t like old family movies, watch Christmas specials for TV shows. I know I’ll be watching the Christmas episodes of South Park, Family Guy, and The Simpsons if spend time with my family in front of the TV tonight. Christmas movies just aren’t some people’s things and that’s okay!
  4. Drink hot chocolate. I like to drink hot chocolate while I’m watching TV, so this would be a great one to pair with tip #2 or #3. If you want to DIY your hot chocolate, click here. If you want to embellish your hot chocolate, try adding caramel sauce, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, and/or peppermint! I also make mine with milk so it’ll be creamier.
  5. Even though it’s super hot everywhere, put on a winter or Christmas themed sweater. Even if it means turning on the AC. Where I live, I can walk outside with shorts and a tank top on right now. But, cuddled up on the couch with your AC on 70 will do the trick! If you don’t like the idea of wearing a sweater, at least weird Christmas pajamas.
  6. Tell stories about past Christmases. The magic of Santa was overflowing in me when I was younger. I would always sleep with both of my sisters and we would wake each other up every once in a while to see if Santa had come yet. I remember one Christmas I was so amazed at the set up because my plug-in turning disco ball was lighting up the room.
  7. Sing with your family. My mother recently bought a piano and declared that we (my sisters, mother, grandfather, and I) will all be singing Christmas carols while I play. It’s goofy, and maybe even a bit awkward, but this time of the year is about family.
  8. Christmas Trees. I know that’s broad, but it’s a broad thing to work with. Take artsy pictures of your lights. Put extra ornaments on the tree. Find your baby ornament(s). Put all of your presents under the tree. Shake boxes to see what you might have gotten from your Great Aunt Mae. Run around it and sing Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. Etc. Sometimes I like to lay underneath the tree and stare up at it.
  9. Give some of your presents early! I opened my presents from my Cousin Shannon early- and something about the Christmas wrapping paper, thoughtful gifts, and the happiness on my family’s face really sparked the Christmas joy inside of me.
  10. Make a gratitude list! Some people don’t get a lot for Christmas or have no family to spend it with. Remember- people are homeless on holidays too! If you’re religious, you could even pray to God, thanking him for your many  blessings. I like to pray/ give gratitude while doing yoga.
  11. Head into town and give Christmas presents to the homeless. Socks, a scarf, a Bible, tasty food… all good ideas. Think about what you may take for granted and give them one of those. You could even wrap it up nicely- they don’t get those, and that sucks. Here are some cute wrapping ideas!

These are just a few tips and if you have some different ones, leave them in the comment section! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!
