It’s the same old bs every single year–“Yeah, I’m gonna start going to the gym more.” And the gym finally evens out to it’s normal count by February. Despite common belief, you don’t have to turn into an all-out gym rat to work out
As a psych major I love learning new things about psychology or seeing interpretations of mental illness that aren’t cheesy classroom videos. Mental health tends to be on display in the media, especially TV shows. I’ve put together a list of shows that personally remind me of psychology.
The United States of Tara
Tara has dissociative identity disorder; known in the past as mutli-personality disorder. Tara is a mother of 2 and a wife, which makes her DID complicate her life. I’ve only seen a few episodes but my step sister loved it.
Not all of the show is centered around psychology-based topics, but one of the main characters has bipolar disorder and they show her manic episodes and explain them. The actress who plays Silver, the bipolar girl, is really good at not making bipolar look like something it’s not like other media interpretations. On the other hand you get to see the social psychology amongst teens and young adults such as social comparison, cognitive dissonance, etc. It’s a really good show and I cried when it ended.
This is a new show and it isn’t mental illness that’s being showcased, but superpowers. David, the main character, reminds me of schizophrenia, PTSD, and DID. In the show he was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a child. The Loudermilks are literally joined together, reminding me of DID. Kerry lives inside of Cary, and only ages when she comes out. It’s a totally complicated show (it makes my head spin) based off of Marvel but it has almost nothing to do with the comics.
I’ve seen some of the old episodes, but apparently everyone is raving about how accurately mental illness is depicted in the new episodes. Emily and Lorelei go to therapy and the general disarry of their lives feel relatable to many with mental illnesses. Some even reported in engaging in downwards self comparison to the struggling characters.
Our main character of this Marvel show, Jessica Jones, has severe PTSD. The scenes where she has flashbacks are intense. She has life-like, interactive flashbacks triggered by visiting the areas where her and her “ex” (it’s more complicated than that) visited. There are crazy events that take place where she has to face this ex and her PTSD gets in the way.
Orange is the New Black
Lolly has schizophrenia and Crazy Eyes has not been officially diagnosed but a plethora of symptoms have been seen on the show. Lori Petty, who plays Lolly said, “It doesn’t mean you can’t be funny or smart just because you have paranoid schizophrenia.” The actresses and creators of the show are obviously dedicated to making this show be an accurate portrayal of mental illness. I have not watched season 2+, but I may now!
My best friend EATS. THIS. SHOW. UP. I was reading articles for this show and I think this article on Revelist puts the basis of the show the best, “Her obsession with rekindling their teenage flame is the lens that unveils Rebecca’s spiraling anxiety and depression. “This is what happy feels like,” she often tells herself, though her reality is completely opposed to that mantra. Those decisions — ditching her medication and upending her life to pursue a man who’s already in a relationship — unfurls the ferocity of her mental illness.”
First off all Blair had/has a bulimia nervosa and she is definitely narcissistic. Eric van der Woodsen is impatient at a mental health facility because he tried to kill himself in the first season. Some would argue that Chuck and Lily are also narcissists, and I definitely believe that Bart is a sociopath. It’s very easy to see all of the social psychology and psychology of personality in these characters, which I love.
Revenge shows the main character’s PTSD through flashbacks and how she plans to avenge her father.
Everybody gets angry, but then there are people who get angry all the time; sometimes for no reason. I used to be one of those people, but I am on the road to stabilizing my moods! There are some regulation tricks I do to be calm and avoid shit that make me mad.
In my social psychology class my professor recently went over SMART goals. I’ve gone over them before in a university seminar, but I loved the way my psych. prof. explained it.
Setting f’ing smart goals sounds so much more empowering than setting measly smart goals. Why be smart when you could be f’ing smart?
This whole notion is based on Locke’s theory of goal setting and at the very bottom there are examples!
These are my actual notes from class:
- A—achievable (7-8 range on the challenging scale)
- R—relevant (why am I trying to do this?)
- T—Time bound (have some kind of expiration or due date)
- Set sub goals that get you incrementally to the top goal, because if you jump right to the top goal, you’ll probably fail.
- Your work ethic definitely helps, but it is not a cure all. There are some things that no matter how much you try you just can’t. Life is about exploiting your strengths. Find what you like and what you’re good at and do that.
Here I’ll explain each section in detail:
Getting feedback or having somebody to hold you accountable always helps people reach their goals. Why do you think diets instruct you to write down every little thing you eat? It’s a way to hold yourself accountable.
If your goal isn’t specific it gives you room for excuses. This is one of the most important steps for me because I love to make excuses for myself when I don’t want to do something. On your goal paper, write down EXACTLY WHAT you want to achieve. Answer the “Who what when where why how” questions.
This is how you’ll be able to tell if you achieve your goal(s). You can measure weight loss with a scale, you can measure graduation with a degree, etc. How can you tell that you achieved your goal?
You have to be able to achieve your goal with little to moderate effort. The key to this is to realistically set your goals, and lead up to big goals in small, achievable increments.
Your goal has to pertain to your current life in a way that gives reason to your goal. This is your driving force, your “why”. Why does this goal matter to you? Is in close enough in the future that you won’t procrastinate or forget about it?
Goals that have a ticking time clock drive you to do them. You have to give yourself a schedule and basis of when this has to be completed by. Why do you think your professors give you a due date for your homework? So you’ll do it and know when you’re done!
F: Writing down everything you eat, having someone spot you at the gym, get a personal trainer at the gym to hold you accountable.
M: I will use the scale in my room to weigh myself once when I wake up every morning until March 30th. I will measure the food I eat in ounces and calories. I will measure success by losing the 10 pounds.
A: This is achievable for me because 10 pounds is not a lot of weight for me and I have done this before. It is obtainable because I do not have to spend a lot of money and I have access to a gym.
R: This is relevant to me because it is almost Spring Break and I’m going to the beach with my new boyfriend and I want to look thin.
T: I want to lose 10 pounds by March 30th, 2017.
Studying for an Exam
F: Studying with people I can concentrate around will allow me to receive feedback by them telling me if I’m right or wrong in mock-quizzes or flashcard drills.
S: I want to study for my Macroeconomics exam every day with my study group of Joe, Maria, and John for 1 hour at Starbucks on George Street by using flashcards, asking each other questions, rewriting my notes, and taking mock-quizzes for 1 week.
M: I will measure the completeness of this goal by making a chart with a check box next to each day that I will check if I studied for the whole hour. I will have my phone to measure the time at Starbucks.
A: This is achievable because I have people that want to study with me, I’m motivated to do well on my exam, and I have ample study materials.
R: This is relevant because my exam is in 1 week and I have to make a good grade or I’ll fail the class. I don’t want to retake it!
T: This is time-bound because the exam is in one week. I also dedicate 1 hour a day to studying so I’ll be more likely to actually study, opposed to setting out 5 hours to not study.
